More than half of the world’s population lives in cities. Some of the urban jungles across the globe are suffocating in bouts of dense smog and extremely high levels of toxic air pollution.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), air pollution is now a greater threat to health than Ebola or HIV and 80% of all urban areas have air pollution levels above what is considered healthy. The levels of particulate matter (a mixture of extremely small particles and liquid droplets that get into the air) are measured to determine pollution levels.
For Earth Day 2017, one of the core campaigns is to promote cities as greener places that co-exist with the environment. Various events are held worldwide to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Cities must accelerate their transition to cleaner and healthier places to live, and when it comes to the air we breathe, who needs to clean up their act the most? Here at eco2greetings, we have created a new interactive map that reveals the different levels of air pollution across the world and the top 10 worst culprits. View the full interactive piece here.
As a united front, we all need to adopt methods to help fight the global air pollution crisis including opting for green buildings, and deciding on other modes of transport like a bike or the bus to help reduce harmful emissions. How does your country compare?
